PNG Informal Sector Needs More Support

PNG small scale farmers in the "informal sector" and those on the streets selling food and local vegetables to make a living should be given more support by government. One of the ways government can support is by identifying and creating economic polices that provide an avenue for these local growers to place their fresh produce such as greens and vegetables, fruits in local supermarkets. Government should increase tariffs on international imports on fruits and vegetables, thus effectively reducing global imports, whilst creating dialogues with stores and major supermarkets to supply the needed vegetables and fruits to feed citizens. We believe this level of supportĀ  would encourage local farmers to work the land, and as people get busy working on the land, then we reduce socio-economic problems like law and order in the cities.
